Berhampore and Newtown west parking permits

The new parking scheme for Berhampore and Newtown west starts on 24 June 2024. Learn how it works and apply for a resident parking permit and visitor day passes.

How the parking scheme works

From 24 June 2024, residential parking in Berhampore and Newtown will be divided into three zones:

  • Berhampore
  • Newtown west
  • Newtown east.

Residential on-street parking in Berhampore and Newtown west will be a mix of:

  • spaces with no time limits – this is unrestricted parking that anyone can use for as long as they want
  • P180 spaces that anyone can use for up to three hours – this time limit applies Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm.

Residents and businesses located within these zones can apply for a permit allowing them to park longer than the time limit.

This new parking scheme will not start in Newtown east (the hospital side) until mid-2025. Until then, current resident parking rules apply.

Areas excluded from the parking scheme zones

There are no changes to parking in commercially zoned areas:

  • in and around the Newtown and Berhampore shopping centres
  • the shops on Constable Street and at Rintoul/Luxford streets.

Commercially zoned areas are not included in the new parking scheme. Therefore, properties in these areas are not eligible for resident parking permits or visitor day passes. Check the parking map and table to see commercial zones.

Streets with parking time limits

Check the parking map and table to see which streets in Berhampore and Newtown west have some parking spaces with a three-hour time limit (P180).

Resident parking permit

If you want to park in P180 spaces near your home for longer than the three-hour time limit, you need to apply for a resident parking permit. A permit will be for the zone you live in, not the whole Berhampore and Newtown area.

There is a maximum of two resident parking permits per household, except where there are multiple mobility permit holders in a single household.

Businesses in residentially zoned streets in Berhampore and Newtown west can also apply for resident parking permits. They can apply for permits for up to two vehicles associated with the business.

The permit is:

  • electronic – your vehicle licence plate number works as the permit
  • only valid for the vehicle it's issued for
  • valid for a maximum of 12 months.

You will need to reapply each year. Getting a permit one year is not a guarantee you’ll get one in future years. It will depend on the number of households that apply each year.

Permit fee

  • 12-month resident parking permit fee: $195.00

Vehicle types not eligible for a resident parking permit

You can’t get a resident parking permit for these types of vehicles:

  • non-motorised vehicles (such as, trailers and caravans), heavy goods vehicles, motorhomes, house buses, buses, and coaches
  • boats
  • all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and quad bikes.

Under the Parking Policy, these vehicles have the lowest priority for long-stay on-street parking. Therefore, they are not eligible for parking permits.

Visitor day passes

A day pass allows anyone visiting your home to park longer than the three-hour time limit in P180 spaces. This pass is valid for a single calendar day.

All households in the Berhampore and Newtown west parking zones can apply for a batch of free visitor day passes every year. You don’t need to have a resident parking permit to get the visitor day passes.

How the day passes are allocated:

  • Households with no off-street parking get 50 free visitor day passes a year.
  • Households with off-street parking get 25 free visitor day passes a year.

You can buy more visitor day passes for $18 each. See how to issue visitor day passes.

Businesses are not eligible to apply for visitor day passes.

Before you apply

If you want to park in a P180 space for as long as you want, you need to apply for a resident parking permit and provide the required documents. Also check your vehicle meets the requirements below.

If you're applying for visitor day passes only, you just need to provide proof of address.
